Getting the E.D.G.E. in Compliance: Equality and Diversity for GLBT Employees

In our effort to ensure that employers operating in New Jersey have the tools to make their work environments inclusive and diverse workplaces that are free from unlawful discrimination against sexual and gender minorities, the Division on Civil Rights ("Division" or "DCR") has developed this free comprehensive book called Getting the E.D.G.E. in Compliance: Equality and Diversity for GLBT Employees, which includes a voluntary checklist and guidance for employers focusing on legal compliance and suggested diversity best practices in the employment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) employees.

Magic of Love: LGBTQ Characters in YA Fantasy (Session Reinstated: Please disregard previous cancelation notice.)

Fantasy and science fiction are often regarded both as windows to other worlds and mirrors on our own. This program will investigate how these dual roles, combined with other theoretical frameworks, can be applied to young adult novels and short stories that feature LGBTQ characters in fantastical settings. Using works by Ameila Atwater-Rhodes, Francesca Lia Block, Robin McKinley, Tamora Pierce, and others, the program will demonstrate ways in which speculative fiction texts can be viewed as forging positive new paths in LGBTQ literature for teens.

Selecting Children's Books about American Indians-Debbie Reese.doc
Are Librarians Unwittingly Complicit? Informed Selection of Books by and about American Indians. Debbie Reese is a tribally-enrolled Pueblo Indian woman from Nambe Pueblo, in New Mexico, and is an assistant professor in American Indian Studies who researches what children learn—in the books we select—about American Indians. . She will share some tools to help us make informed decisions about using the books in our current collection, and educating ourselves and our patrons about the problems and issues of American Indian books, issues that we don't always have the resources and information to understand.
