The Best Defense is a Good Offense: Crafting a Successful Campaign for Library Support
As more and more libraries face threats to funding, challenges to current governance and a sharpening decline in governmental support, it is abundantly clear that only an organized and carefully planned strategy can counteract these forces. Even if the only constituency to be persuaded is one governmental decision maker, careful deliberations can mean the difference between success and failure. Libby Post, President of Communication Services, who has been working with not-for-profit agencies for twenty years will conduct the session. She has helped craft public relations campaigns, develop messages, communicate with constituents and create governmental coalitions. Using her methods and skills, libraries have won increased funding and ensured public support for library initiatives. Ms. Post will provide lobbying training, teach skills for building coalitions, and planning successful campaigns.

The Teen Librarian As Confidante: Knowing Where, When, and How to Draw the Line
Have you ever been asked to drive a stranded teen home after the library has closed for the night? Has a teen ever confided to you that he self-mutilates, has an eating disorder, or wants to come out to his parents, but just doesn't know how? You want to help, but when does helping cross an ethical or legal line? A panel including a library director, school counselor, social worker, attorney, and school resources police officer will discuss how teen librarians can help their teens while maintaining healthy & professional boundaries with their teens. Learn what your responsibilities are to your patrons, your patrons' parents, and the library. A lively discussion will follow the panelists' presentations.

Are Librarians Unwittingly Complicit? Informed Selection of Books by and about American Indians
How many books about Native Americans are in your collection today? Chances are, according to Debbie Reese, that any given children's book (fiction, nonfiction, folklore) about American Indians has major flaws. Dr. Reese is a tribally-enrolled Pueblo Indian woman from Nambe Pueblo, in New Mexico , and is an assistant professor in American Indian Studies who researches what children learn-in the books we select-about American Indians.  Her articles have appeared in Horn Book and School Library Journal, as well as in many scholarly early childhood development and education journals. She will share some tools to help us make informed decisions about using the books in our current collection, and educating ourselves and our patrons about the problems and issues of American Indian books, issues that we don't always have the resources and information to understand.

“A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Library”
A talk by Bill Barnes, one of the creators of Unshelved, a comic strip about a library
If you work in libraries you know that sometimes you have to laugh or else you'll cry. In this 50 minute talk, Bill deliver the laughs as he takes you on a tour of the world's only library comic strip. The staff and patrons of the Mallville Public Library are supposed to be fictional, but they are instantly recognizable, giving you a unique opportunity to gently laugh at yourself and the people you work with. Bill will deconstruct some of the greatest hits of the comic strip, and tell the true library stories that inspired them. The peculiar (and we do mean peculiar) insights into librarianship always leave attendees smiling and talking among themselves as they depart energized, validated, and uplifted.
Please join us on Tuesday evening, from 7 to 9 pm, for the President's Program. You can enjoy dessert while listening to Bill Barnes from the Unshelved comic strip! Book signing will follow. Open to all - no ticket or registration necessary. Join us to see the humorous incidents that happen everyday in our libraries! http://www.unshelved.com/
